Don't worry about 50 year old ears. You may not be able to hear the dog whistle frequencies, but you can still judge what is good or not. Maybe even better now.
I noticed my eyes starting to go soft at about 40. Now I need reading glasses, but I can still tell a babe from a dog, no problem.
Think about a budget for your tube amps. When you come up with a number, float it here. You'll get plenty of suggestions. A nice tuber amp will really help these sing.
The N1500A crossover in your second photo is an appropriate crossover for the 604E, but I can't see the model number for your other crossover in your first photo. Can you photograph the side of that crossover that has the model number printed on it?
Not necessary it is the original crossover for that driver !!! :2thumbsup:
So you got original drivers and crossovers for $20 bucks ten bucks apiece not bad, where do you live.I need to find deals like that. The only problem I can see is that they aren't matching but that is only for resale purposes.Your ears shouldn't or could care less. Welcome to the board :welcome:
I have been walking past two big gawdy black speakers in the theater for the last two years, tonight I stopped and looked sure as crap they have altec badges on the front of them I'll try to remember to bring my camera to work tomorrow and get a couple of shots...they just used them for a play the other day so their still in use but I'm gonna be keeping my eyes open in case they try to upgrade!!!! The horns stick out of the center of the enclosure ??? anywho I'll get some pics just for the gang here :2thumbsup:
A$$hole! Just kidding. GREAT FIND and GREAT PURCHASE!
Carefully remove the speakers and send us photos. One White and one Green, might be quite different. There were many models of the duplexes.
Green = early 604 or 605. Whites were later 604's. E's I believe. The surrounds changed after the first 604's from paper to accordian cloth. 605's were all accordian surrounds.
$20? I spent that on dinner last night. (In Hawaii)
Crank em up! Use tubes.
Shoot, I post and 5 guys post while I'm posting......
And ask the same questions I have......we love Altec. You will too.
Ron
I forgot my camera so I just went and looked at the back of the ones at work, they're 9844's.
"Check out what I bought 2 days ago for 20 bucks!!! No it's not a joke, 20 Freakin Bucks!!!!!!!!! "
You really hit the mother-load. Scored the big one. Congratulations.
I have been waiting for a pair of Model 19's to fall in my lap like that for years.
You are further proof that these things can happen.
I too am curious about the origin of those cabinets. Hopefully more will appear on this thread
as time goes by. The shelf inside is most interesting.
My early hobby work (70's) on large reflex cabinets, I found that a shelf between
the woofer and port would eliminate air turbulence at the port caused by a shorter
path from the bottom of the woofer compared to the top. This was all trial and error
stuff because we had no way to communicate with others like we have here and now.
My idea then may have come from the Klipsch Cornwall which seems to have a similar
proportion shelf to yours, though my shelf was not nearly that deep or low.

Maybe I was on my way to MBR and didn't know it.
